Fund the session ceiling
A monthly budget plan is not the cash you load for one session. Before a live run, fund only the session or daily ceiling you already set. Leftover balance above the cap is still spendable if tools can reach it — empty or park excess, then fund the ceiling. Pair it with spend caps, a dedicated agent wallet, review before place, revoke before you debug, and a proactive ping is not permission to spend.

Answer first
A monthly budget plan is not the cash you load for one session. The plan is how much you are willing to risk this calendar month. The load is only the session ceiling you move into the dedicated spend path for this run. Write the plan, empty or park any surplus, then fund only that ceiling. A written cap with a fat funded balance still lets tools spend the leftover. Agent Lane publishes the checklist. We do not place trades, hold wallets, or run your agents.
What this page is
A short operator guide for the cash step on the shield — the habit siblings mention as “fund only the ceiling.” Pair it with agent spend caps, the dedicated agent wallet, review before place, revoke before you debug, the brokerage shield, the crypto shield, x402 buyer basics, and the shared-box checklist when the agent runs on a shared computer.
We are a publisher, not a trading desk. Product screens change; confirm balances and tool names on the official page before you put money in.
A monthly budget plan is not the money loaded for one session
A monthly budget plan is the calendar-month number you are willing to risk. It answers one question: how much can this project cost this month? It is not cash sitting where the agent can spend it tonight.
The money loaded for one session is a different number. It is the amount you move into the dedicated spend path for this run — the session ceiling. In these guides, a sleeve means that dedicated balance (a wallet or a brokerage spend pocket) the agent’s tools can actually reach. Load the sleeve to the session ceiling. Do not load it to the monthly plan.
A connector plug-in the agent can call is often called an MCP. If an MCP, a pay tool, or a place tool can reach the sleeve, it can spend whatever balance is there. A chat note that says the monthly budget is $500 does not shrink a sleeve you just funded with $500 for a $40 session.
| Monthly budget plan | Money loaded for one session | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | Calendar-month risk you accept on paper | Cash in the sleeve for this run |
| What it is for | Deciding how much the month may cost | Stopping a live loop at the session ceiling |
| If you mix them | You treat the plan as if it were already funded | One run can spend the month before the month number matters |
Write the monthly plan. Fund only this session. Refill later, after you read receipts and the live tools are off. Stacked limits are on agent spend caps. The cash steps stay on this page.
An agent that messages you first and offers to book a ride or a flight still does not get the monthly plan loaded “so it can grab it.” That offer is not permission to pay. See a proactive ping is not permission to spend.
Your monthly plan is not the session fund
Short answer: your monthly plan is the most this project may cost in a calendar month. The session fund is the cash you put in the sleeve for one run, and it should equal the session ceiling. Keep the monthly plan on paper. Fund one session at a time. Set the limits on agent spend caps, then use this page for the cash step.
A worked example
| Number | Example | Where it lives |
|---|---|---|
| Monthly plan | $400 this month | Written down. Not in the sleeve. |
| Daily max | $80 per day | Code or product settings |
| Session ceiling | $40 per run | Code or product settings |
| Session fund | $40 loaded before this run | The sleeve the tools can reach |
With $40 in the sleeve, a runaway loop stops at $40. With $400 in the sleeve and a $40 cap only in a prompt, the same loop can spend the month. The cap you wrote down does not shrink the balance the tools can reach.
How to size the session fund from the monthly plan
- Start from the monthly plan. Write the dollar amount you are willing to lose this month.
- Count live sessions. Estimate how many live runs you expect this month.
- Divide and round down. Monthly plan ÷ sessions gives a first session ceiling. Round down, not up.
- Check the daily max. The session ceiling must sit inside the daily max. The daily max must sit inside the monthly plan.
- Fund only that number. Load the session fund, check the balance on the official page, then connect.
- Refill on purpose. After the run, read receipts with the tools off. Then decide on the next session fund.
Your app plan is not the session fund either
A monthly AI app plan or usage allowance pays for the model and the tools. It is not cash the agent can spend at a broker, wallet, or merchant. Track it apart from the spend sleeve. Running low on usage is no reason to load more cash or to skip review before place.
Why leftover above the cap is the failure mode
- Cap on paper, surplus in the sleeve. Session and daily maxes bound one path; the funded balance is another. Surplus cash the agent can reach still spends.
- Top-up “for later.” Leaving tomorrow’s refill in the wallet while connectors are live turns one bad prompt into a larger fill.
- Missed review, open balance. Review before place stops the first bad place only if someone is watching. Excess balance is the second chance to lose more.
A written ceiling does not hide surplus. If tools can place, pay, or sign against a fat sleeve, the leftover is still spendable. Empty or park excess first; then fund the ceiling.
What “fund the session ceiling” means
- Ceiling already set. Session max and daily max written in code or product settings you control — see agent spend caps.
- Empty or park excess. Move surplus off the dedicated spend wallet or Agentic sleeve to a place the agent cannot trade or sign — or empty it.
- Fund only this run. Move in only the amount for this session or day. No “for later” top-up while tools will be live.
- Check before connect. Read the balance on the official page before you enable place, pay, or sign tools.
- Empty when done. After the run, park leftover funds — deepen overnight/idle: empty the sleeve overnight. Bound how long the live window stays open: session time-box. Proof of what ran: receipt log after the session. Before you raise caps or dig into a bad prompt, revoke before you debug and rotate before you raise the balance.
Funding more than the ceiling “just in case” is how a cap becomes theater. The balance the agent can reach is the last hard stop — keep it at the number you set.
Where it sits in the shield stack
- Dedicated agent wallet — money the bot can reach; long-term holdings stay outside.
- Spend caps — monthly budget plan, session ceiling, and daily max. The monthly plan is not the cash you load.
- Fund the session ceiling — empty or park excess, then put in only that ceiling for this run.
- Review before place — human gate on amount, destination, asset, and venue.
- Venue — brokerage MCP, on-chain pay path, or other rail behind the gate.
- Revoke before you debug — kill-and-isolate when something goes wrong.
Healthy run uses layers 1–5. Funding is the cash step after you set the numbers and before you open live tools. Bound the live window with a session time-box so a loop cannot keep placing until the ceiling is gone. Skip it and a written cap still leaves surplus spendable.
How to fund the session ceiling
- Separate the monthly plan from this load. Write the monthly budget plan — how much this calendar month may cost. Do not move that whole number into the spend path. The cash you load is only the session ceiling for this run.
- Write the ceiling first. Confirm the session max and daily max you already set in code or product settings. Those numbers are the ceiling you will fund — not a chat reminder.
- Empty or park excess. If the dedicated spend wallet or Agentic sleeve holds more than the ceiling, move the surplus to a place the agent cannot trade or sign — or empty it.
- Fund only the ceiling. Move in only the amount for this session or day. Do not top up “for later” while connectors will be live.
- Check the balance before connect. Read the balance on the official page before you enable brokerage, payment, or payer MCP tools. The number should match the ceiling.
- Keep review before place on. Standing rules: amount, destination, asset, and venue shown before any place, pay, or signature. No “just place it” or “don’t ask.”
- Empty again when the run ends. After the session, write a receipt log after the session, then empty or park leftover funds. Before you raise caps or dig into a bad prompt, follow revoke before you debug and rotate before you raise the balance. Overnight or long idle: empty the sleeve overnight. Before travel: kill switch before travel. When you reconnect, use one connector at a time. First prove-out without cash: paper before live.
Practical checklist
- Numbers before cash. Caps written first — see agent spend caps. Then fund.
- Sleeve at the ceiling. Surplus off the dedicated wallet or Agentic sleeve before connect — see dedicated agent wallet.
- No top-up while open. Do not refill mid-run “for later.” Refill yourself after you read receipts and the pipe is closed.
- Shared-box pass. Connectors, passwords, and open sessions on a shared computer — see shared-box.

FAQ
- Is my monthly plan the same as the session fund?
- No. Your monthly plan is the most you are willing to lose or spend on agent runs this calendar month. The session fund is the cash you load for one run, sized to the session ceiling. If you load the whole monthly plan, one bad run can spend the month before the monthly number ever matters.
- Is a monthly bot budget enough?
- No, not on its own. A monthly budget is a planning number. It does not stop a live run. You also need a session ceiling and a daily max written in code or product settings, and a sleeve funded only to that session ceiling. The stacked limits are on agent spend caps.
- How much should I put in the session fund?
- Put in the session ceiling and no more. A simple start is to divide the monthly plan by the number of live sessions you expect, then round down. Stay inside the daily max. If a run hits the ceiling, the run stops. You decide on the next fund after you read receipts with the tools off.
- Does my AI app subscription or usage plan count as the session fund?
- No. A monthly app plan or usage allowance pays for the model and the tools. It is not money the agent can spend at a broker, wallet, or merchant. Track it apart. Running low on usage is no reason to load more cash into the sleeve or to skip review before place.
- Is a monthly budget plan the same as the money loaded for one session?
- No. The monthly budget plan is the calendar-month risk you accept. The money loaded for one session is the cash you move into the sleeve for this run — the session ceiling. Loading the whole monthly plan makes that month spendable in a single live run.
- What should I load if the monthly plan is larger than the session ceiling?
- Load only the session ceiling, and stay inside the daily max. Leave the rest of the monthly plan unfunded until a later session, after you read receipts and the tools are off.
- What does fund the session ceiling mean?
- Fund the session ceiling means: before a live agent spend run, put only the session max or daily max you already wrote into the dedicated spend wallet or Agentic sleeve. That load is not your monthly budget plan. Empty or park any leftover balance above the session cap first. A written cap with a fat funded balance still lets tools spend the excess if they can reach it.
- Why is leftover balance above the cap a failure mode?
- Session and daily maxes in code or product settings are one brake. The funded balance is another. If the sleeve holds more than the ceiling and tools can place, pay, or sign, a bad prompt, retry, or missed review can spend the leftover. Caps do not magically hide surplus cash.
- Where does funding the ceiling sit in the shield stack?
- Stack order for a healthy run: dedicated agent wallet → spend caps (write the numbers) → fund only that ceiling → review before place → venue. Funding is the cash step after you set the numbers and before you open live tools. Incident response still uses revoke before you debug.
- What is the minimum fund order?
- Write the session and daily maxes → empty or park excess on the spend sleeve → fund only the ceiling for this run → check the balance before you connect → keep review before place on. Do not top up “for later” while connectors are live.
- Does funding the ceiling replace caps, wallet, or review?
- No. Caps are the numbers you enforce. The dedicated wallet keeps long-term holdings outside. Review stops the first bad place. Funding the ceiling makes the balance match the numbers. You need the full stack.
- When do I empty or park excess?
- Before every live run if the sleeve is above the ceiling, after a session ends, before you raise caps, and before you leave a live connector overnight — see empty the sleeve overnight. Same habit as revoke: do not leave spendable surplus beside open tools.
- Where do I apply this next?
- Before you raise again: confirm fills in the broker, not chat. Hard dollar limits: agent spend caps. Separate spend path: dedicated agent wallet. Human gate: review before place. Incident: revoke before you debug. Brokerage MCP: shield brokerage spend. On-chain hygiene: shield crypto spend. Paying for a web request: x402 buyer basics. Shared computer: shared-box checklist. Agent Lane publishes the checklist; we do not place trades or hold wallets.
