Never paste API keys in chat
Never paste API keys, session cookies, seed phrases, or broker passwords into a chat with an agent — once in the transcript they can be logged, replayed, or leaked. Use the product’s secret/vault path or a dedicated connector grant instead. Pair it with never share a seed phrase with an agent, connect only what you need, rotate before you raise the balance, and separate browser profile for the agent.

Answer first
Run never paste API keys in chat: do not paste API keys, session cookies, seed phrases, broker passwords, or other long-lived secrets into agent chat, prompts, memory writes, shared-box notes, or screenshots the bot can read. Use the product’s secret vault, an env path the agent is not asked to echo, or a dedicated connector grant instead. Once a secret is in the transcript it can be logged, replayed, or leaked. Agent Lane publishes the checklist. We do not hold credentials, place trades, or run your agents.
What this page is
A short operator guide for the spend-safety rule that secrets never enter the chat transcript. It widens the cold-store line from never share a seed phrase with an agent to API keys, cookies, and broker passwords. Pair it with connect only what you need, separate browser profile for the agent, rotate before you raise the balance, shared-box, agent memory hygiene, revoke before you debug, and dedicated agent wallet.
We are a publisher, not a vault vendor. Product screens change; confirm the official secret or connector path before you put money behind a live grant. We do not invent a product secret UI.
Why pasting secrets into chat is the failure mode
- Transcript durability. Chat is logged, backed up, and often shared — a pasted key outlives the session.
- Replay. An API key, cookie, or password in the scrollback can be copied into the next tool call or by anyone with transcript access.
- Memory write. “Remember this token” stores the secret for every future session — see agent memory hygiene.
- Screenshot / paste into notes. Shared-box notes and images the bot can OCR are still agent-visible — see shared-box.
- “Just so you can configure the connector.” Pasting a broker password or API secret “so the agent can set it up” still puts the credential in chat. Use the product’s grant or vault path instead.
A secret in the transcript is a secret the next prompt, log, shared user, or leak can replay. Caps and review do not undo a credential that already left the vault.
What “never paste API keys in chat” means
- No paste into chat. API keys, session cookies, seed phrases, broker passwords, and similar long-lived secrets stay out of the transcript.
- Vault or connector grant. Use the product’s official secret/vault path or a dedicated OAuth/scoped connector grant.
- Least privilege. Enable only the tools this job needs — connect only what you need.
- Seeds still offline. Recovery phrases follow never share a seed — this page does not relax that rule.
- If it already leaked. Revoke/rotate at the issuer; prune memory and notes; then rotate before you raise.
Pasting an API key or broker password “just this once” so the agent can help wire a connector is still pasting a secret into chat. Prefer the product’s vault or grant path — never the transcript.
Where it sits in the shield stack
- Dedicated agent wallet — money the bot can reach; long-term holdings stay outside.
- Never share a seed phrase with an agent — master keys stay offline.
- Never paste API keys in chat — API keys, cookies, and passwords stay out of the transcript; use vaults and connector grants.
- Connect only what you need — minimum live tool set for this job.
- Separate browser profile — personal cookies and vault unlocks off the agent profile.
- Spend caps + review before place — bound and gate the spend path.
- Revoke before you debug / rotate before raise — leak response before any top-up.
Healthy stack: secrets in vaults/grants → minimum connectors → caps and review. Skip the paste rule and one chat line can hand the agent (or a leak) a live credential.
How to keep secrets out of chat
- Keep secrets out of chat. Do not paste API keys, session cookies, seed phrases, broker passwords, or similar into agent chat, prompts, memory writes, shared notes, or screenshots for the bot.
- Use the product secret or vault path. Store credentials where the product expects them — official vault, secret store, or env path — not in the transcript. Confirm labels on the official page; do not invent a product screen.
- Prefer a dedicated connector grant. Use an OAuth or scoped MCP/connector grant the product issues. Least privilege: connect only what you need; reopen after revoke with one connector at a time. When an app accepts AgentID, the agent can sign up with its own inbox and create its own key in that app, so you never hand over yours: how AI agents sign in with AgentID.
- Separate browser and vault unlocks. Run agent browser sessions in a separate browser profile so personal banking cookies and password-vault unlocks do not sit beside live spend connectors — see shared-box.
- Harden memory and shared box. Prune secrets from agent memory. Keep shared notes and
.envfree of pasteable credentials. Seeds still follow never share a seed. - If a secret already landed in chat. Treat it as compromised. Revoke or rotate at the issuer. Follow revoke before you debug, clear memory and notes, then rotate before you raise the balance. Overnight idle: empty the sleeve overnight.
Practical checklist
- No secrets in chat, memory, notes, or screenshots for the bot.
- Vault or connector grant — never “paste so the agent can configure it.”
- Least privilege — only the connectors this job needs.
- Leak response memorized — revoke/rotate → prune → rotate before raise.
Brokerage path: Shield brokerage spend. On-chain pay: Shield crypto spend.

FAQ
- What does never paste API keys in chat mean?
- It means: do not paste API keys, session cookies, seed phrases, broker passwords, or other long-lived secrets into agent chat, prompts, memory writes, shared-box notes, or screenshots the bot can read. Use the product’s secret vault, env path the agent cannot echo, or a dedicated connector grant instead. Once a secret is in the transcript it can be logged, replayed, or leaked.
- Why is pasting secrets into chat the failure mode?
- Chat transcripts are durable: logs, backups, shared users, support exports, and the next prompt can all see what you pasted. An API key or cookie in chat is a credential the agent — or anyone with transcript access — can replay. Caps and review do not undo a secret that already left the vault.
- How is this different from never-share-seed-with-agent?
- Never share a seed is the hard rule for wallet recovery phrases and exportable private keys. This page is the broader spend-safety rule for API keys, session cookies, broker passwords, and other credentials that also must never enter chat. Seeds are one class of secret; use both guides.
- What should I use instead of pasting into chat?
- Use the product’s official secret or vault path, a dedicated connector grant (MCP OAuth or scoped token the product issues), or an env/secret store the agent tools are designed to read without echoing into the transcript. Prefer least privilege — connect only what you need.
- What if I already pasted a key or password into chat?
- Treat it as compromised. Revoke or rotate that credential at the issuer, prune agent memory and shared notes that held it, disconnect live spend connectors, and rotate before you raise any balance. Pair with revoke before you debug.
- Do I invent a product secret UI?
- No. Use the official vault, connector, or env path the product already documents. Agent Lane does not invent product menus, click-paths, or claim a specific secret screen for any vendor.
- Where do I apply this next?
- Seeds: never share a seed phrase with an agent. Live surface: connect only what you need. Browser: separate browser profile for the agent. Raise/refill: rotate before you raise the balance. Incident: revoke before you debug. Agent Lane publishes the checklist; we do not hold credentials or place trades.
