Robinhood MCP: how to connect an external AI agent safely
To connect an external AI agent to Robinhood, add Robinhood’s official Trading MCP server to your AI tool, sign in, and open the separate MCP account the agent will trade in. The agent can read all your Robinhood accounts but trade only in that account, so turn trade approvals on and fund it with only what you can afford to lose.

What is the Robinhood MCP?
MCP (Model Context Protocol) is an open standard that lets an AI agent connect to an outside app and act there. The Robinhood Trading MCP is Robinhood’s own server at https://agent.robinhood.com/mcp/trading. You add that link to an AI tool such as Claude Code, Claude Desktop, ChatGPT, Codex, Cursor, or Grok, sign in to Robinhood, and open a dedicated MCP account for the agent. Robinhood launched agentic trading in May 2026 and later added built-in Robinhood Agents inside its app; the MCP is the route for bringing your own agent. What can the agent do?
| Area | What Robinhood says the agent can do |
|---|---|
| Read | All your Robinhood accounts (including account numbers), positions, balances, and order history; quotes, charts, fundamentals, news, SEC filings, analyst ratings |
| Trade | Long stock, options, and crypto orders in the MCP account only: market (share or dollar amount), limit, stop limit, and stop market |
| Preview | Simulate stock and option orders and preview crypto orders before placing (for example review_equity_order) |
| Cancel | Cancel open orders; exercise options and cancel exercises |
| Organize | Watchlists, saved scans, and price or indicator alerts |
What can’t the agent do?
- Trade outside the MCP account. Robinhood says the agent can only place trades in your Robinhood MCP (agentic) account, even though it can read your other accounts.
- Move crypto. It can trade crypto but cannot transfer, stake, or lend it.
- Open a crypto account for you. It can point you to where to set one up; you do it.
- Trade crypto in restricted states. Agent crypto trading is not available in some states, including New York.
- Get approval-free status on everything. Robinhood says certain trades may still need your approval even with trade approvals off.
Safety controls and spending limits
| Control | What it does | Default for an external agent |
|---|---|---|
| Trade approvals | The agent proposes trades; you review and place them yourself in the Robinhood app | Off (turn it on in Agent Settings, Safety Controls) |
| Separate MCP account | Trades happen only in this account, not your main one | Required |
| What you fund it with | The agent can only trade the money in the MCP account. This is your practical AI agent spending limit. | Up to you |
| Disconnect | Removing the MCP connection in your AI tool cuts the agent off | Up to you |
Robinhood’s help pages do not describe a per-day dollar cap for MCP accounts, so set your own limits on top: a monthly budget and session ceiling, a daily loss cap, and review before place.
How do I set it up safely?
- Read what the agent will see. Before connecting, accept that the agent can read all your Robinhood accounts, positions, balances, and order history.
- Connect from your AI tool. Add
https://agent.robinhood.com/mcp/tradingas an MCP server in your AI tool and sign in to Robinhood when prompted. - Open the MCP account. Robinhood prompts you to open a dedicated MCP account during sign-in. You need a primary individual investing account in good standing.
- Turn trade approvals on. In the MCP account tab, open Agent Settings, then Safety Controls, and switch Trade approvals on so the agent proposes and you place.
- Fund only what you can lose. Move in only the amount you are willing to let an agent trade. That balance is the agent’s ceiling.
- Test with read-only questions first. Ask for portfolio, quotes, and an order preview before letting it place anything. See how to test an AI agent.
If your AI tool lets you allow or block individual tools, keep order-placing tools (such as place_equity_order) on “ask first.” See read-only quote before a trade connector.
How do I onboard an external agent to Robinhood?
Add https://agent.robinhood.com/mcp/trading as an MCP server in your AI tool, sign in to Robinhood when prompted, and open the dedicated MCP account the agent trades in. You need a primary individual investing account in good standing. Turn trade approvals on before the first order.
Does Robinhood have an AI trading bot?
Robinhood offers two things: the Trading MCP, which lets you connect your own third-party agent (Claude, ChatGPT, Codex, Cursor, Grok and others), and built-in Robinhood Agents inside the app. Either way, the agent trades only in a separate agentic account and you are responsible for its trades.
Can the agent see my main Robinhood account?
Yes, it can read it. Robinhood says a connected external agent gets read access to all your Robinhood accounts (including account numbers), positions, balances, and order history. It can only place trades in your Robinhood MCP account.
Can the agent move money out?
Robinhood says the agent can trade crypto but cannot transfer, stake, or lend it; those actions are yours in the app. The agent’s trading is limited to the money in the MCP account, so how much you fund that account is your real spending limit.
Is trade approval on by default?
No, not for external agents. Robinhood turns trade approvals off by default for MCP accounts (and on by default for its built-in agents). Turn it on under your MCP account’s Agent Settings, Safety Controls, if you want to place each trade yourself.
Does Robinhood MCP work in Claude Code?
Yes. Robinhood’s instructions are to run claude mcp add robinhood-trading --transport http https://agent.robinhood.com/mcp/trading, then type /mcp, select robinhood-trading, and sign in. Robinhood lists setup steps for Claude Desktop, ChatGPT, Codex, Cursor, and Grok too.
Can my agent trade crypto through the MCP?
Only if you have a Robinhood Crypto account tied to the agentic or MCP account and accept the updated agreement. Robinhood says agent crypto trading is not available in some states, including New York.
Will Agent Lane tell me what to trade?
No. This page explains the connection and the safety controls. What your agent trades, and whether it trades at all, is your decision.
