Can AI agents make purchases? How it works and how to set limits
Yes, an AI agent can buy things once you hand it a way to pay. Here is how agents actually pay, what can go wrong, and the simple limits to set before you let one spend.

How do AI agents pay for things?
| Way it pays | What it means | Main risk | Safer setup |
|---|---|---|---|
| Card number at checkout | The agent types a card number into a store’s checkout page | The number can leak into chat logs or be reused | Its own virtual card with a hard limit |
| Payment connector (MCP) | A tool in your AI app that can charge a card or place an order for you. MCP (Model Context Protocol) is the standard many AI apps use to plug into outside services. | The tool can spend whenever the agent calls it | Set the tool to “ask first” and connect only what you need |
| Crypto wallet | The agent signs payments from a wallet, sometimes per request using x402 | Crypto payments usually can’t be reversed | A dedicated wallet with a small balance |
| Saved account | The agent uses a browser where you’re logged in with a saved card | It can buy anything that account can | A separate browser profile with no saved cards |
What can go wrong?
- Wrong item or quantity. The agent misreads the request or the page.
- Repeat charges. A loop or retry buys the same thing twice. See reject duplicate orders.
- Prompt injection. Hidden text on a page tells the agent to buy or pay something else.
- Leaked card details. The card number ends up in a log. See never paste keys in chat; the same applies to card numbers.
How to let an agent buy things safely
- Decide what it may buy. Write down the job (for example, reorder printer ink up to $40) before you connect any payment.
- Give it its own payment method. A virtual card or small-balance wallet just for the agent, never your main card or bank login.
- Set a hard limit. Per purchase and per day or week, set at the most you’re willing to lose on a mistake.
- Limit where it can spend. Lock the card to specific merchants or categories where your provider allows it.
- Require a ping for anything new. New merchant, new item, or over the usual amount: the agent asks you first.
- Check receipts weekly. Look at every charge and freeze the card the moment something looks wrong.

Can AI agents make purchases?
Yes. An AI agent can buy things when you give it a way to pay: a card number, a payment connector, a crypto wallet, or a logged-in shopping account. Without one of those, it can only find products and fill a cart for you to check out.
How does an AI agent actually pay?
Four common ways: it types a card number into a checkout page, it uses a payment connector or MCP tool that charges a card you set up, it pays from a crypto wallet (for example with x402, a standard that lets a website ask for a small crypto payment per request), or it clicks “buy” in an account where your card is already saved.
Is it safe to give an AI agent my credit card?
Not your main card. Give it a separate virtual card with a hard limit, or a wallet with only a small balance, so a mistake or a trick can only cost what that card or wallet holds.
Can an agent be tricked into buying something?
Yes. Text on a web page can contain hidden instructions (called prompt injection) that try to steer the agent. A spending limit, a list of allowed merchants, and asking you before any new purchase are the defenses.
Who is responsible if the agent buys the wrong thing?
Usually you. The purchase was made with your payment method under your account. Card disputes may help with fraud, but a purchase your own agent made is hard to dispute. That is why limits matter more than refunds.
What should an agent never be allowed to do?
Raise its own spending limit, add new payment methods, see your main card or bank login, or pay a new merchant without asking you first.
