AI agent memory explained: what agents remember and how to control it
AI (artificial intelligence) agent memory is how an agent keeps information it can use later: what you said earlier in a task, your preferences from last week, or facts about your business. Without memory, every conversation starts from zero. With too much, an agent can carry old mistakes, private details, or a planted instruction into every future job.

The kinds of AI agent memory
| Kind | What it holds | How long it lasts |
|---|---|---|
| Working memory | What fits in the current conversation or task (often called the context window) | Ends with the task |
| Saved notes | Facts the agent writes down to reuse: your name, preferences, business details | Until you or it deletes them |
| Files and knowledge | Documents you give it to search, such as a help guide or price list | As long as they are connected |
| Shared memory | Notes several agents can read | Until someone prunes them |
What memory is good for
- Fewer repeats. You stop re-explaining your business every time.
- Consistency. It remembers your tone, rules, and preferences.
- Long jobs. It can pick up a task where it left off.
The risks of agent memory
- Old or wrong facts. A price that changed last month keeps showing up.
- Private details. Customer data or secrets saved where they should not be. See never paste API keys in chat.
- Planted instructions. A web page can trick an agent into saving a rule that affects later jobs. See what is prompt injection.
- Leaks between people. A shared agent that remembers one person’s details can reveal them to another.
How to control what your AI agent remembers
- Find the memory settings. Most agent apps let you see, edit, and delete saved memories. Look before you rely on it.
- Keep secrets out entirely. Passwords, keys, and recovery phrases never go into memory.
- Store business facts in one document. A file you control is easier to update than scattered memories.
- Separate private and shared memory. See agent memory hygiene.
- Prune on a schedule. Delete old and wrong entries monthly, and after any odd behavior.
Frequently asked questions
Do AI agents have memory?
Many do. They hold the current task in working memory, and some save notes, preferences, and files to use in later conversations.
What is a context window?
The amount of text an AI model can consider at once, including the conversation so far. It acts as short-term memory.
Can I delete what an AI agent remembers?
Usually yes. Most agent apps have memory settings where you can view, edit, and delete saved items.
Is AI agent memory a privacy risk?
It can be, if private details or secrets get saved. Keep secrets out, review saved memories, and prune them regularly.
Does memory make an agent safer?
No. Memory helps with consistency, but it does not replace approvals, spending caps, or limited access.
