# A proactive ping is not permission to spend

An agent that messages you first and offers to book a ride or a flight has not been told to pay. A proactive ping is not a booking and not a charge. Pair it with spend caps and a session ceiling. Agent Lane does not book travel or hold funds.

## Answer first

The ping is a question. Permission is your yes to this merchant, this amount, and this destination, shown before any book or pay tool runs. Payment is money actually moving, and only from the session ceiling you loaded — not from the monthly budget plan.

## Terms

- **Proactive ping** — the agent starts the conversation and offers to book or pay.
- **Monthly budget plan** (sometimes called an envelope) — calendar-month risk on paper.
- **Session ceiling** — cash you load for this run.
- **Sleeve** — the dedicated balance the tools can reach.
- **MCP** — a connector plug-in the agent can call.

Silence is not a yes. A price check is not a ticket.

## How to keep the offer from becoming a charge

1. Treat the ping as a question. If merchant, amount, or destination is missing, the answer is not yet.
2. Require a human yes outside the agent’s own message.
3. Allow only destinations you already listed ([whitelist-merchants-only.md](./whitelist-merchants-only.md)).
4. Load only the session ceiling ([fund-session-ceiling.md](./fund-session-ceiling.md), [agent-spend-caps.md](./agent-spend-caps.md)).
5. If you do not answer, do not book and do not pay.
6. Confirm any real charge on the merchant or the card, not only in chat.
